Charming historic inn with friendly staff and great location

Guests appreciate the characterful Tudor-style building, welcoming staff, and convenient central location near key Gloucester attractions. The food and beverage offerings receive frequent compliments, while some practical limitations reflect the building's age.

Guests often praise

  • The authentic historic atmosphere with oak beams and period features.
  • Friendly, helpful, and attentive staff who enhance the stay.
  • Quality home-cooked food, especially the steak and ale pie and breakfast.
  • Convenient location within walking distance to Gloucester Cathedral and city attractions.
  • Clean and comfortable rooms with a good value for the price.

Worth knowing

  • The building’s age means no lifts and narrow, steep stairs.

  • Some rooms have noise from nearby external units or street, though this varies by location.
  • No free parking on-site; nearby paid options require a short walk.
  • The hotel offers free Wi-Fi but lacks fitness, pool, and airport shuttle facilities.

Best for

  • Visitors seeking a historic and characterful stay in Gloucester.

About this property

Welcome to The New Inn Hotel

Set in a 600-year-old Tudor-style building, The New Inn Hotel offers budget accommodation within richly detailed surroundings of oak beams and panelling. This historic inn provides a blend of traditional character and practical amenities, including free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a restaurant, and bars. Although there is no parking or fitness center, the hotel is smoke-free, kid-friendly, and serves breakfast on-site.

Located at 16 Northgate Street in Gloucester, the hotel is a short walk from key attractions such as Gloucester Cathedral and the Gloucester Folk Museum. Its central position makes it an ideal base for visitors interested in exploring the city on foot, with nearby sites like Gloucester Docks and the Painswick Rococo Garden easily accessible. Guests appreciate the convenient location, though some note that the historic nature of the building means there are steep stairs and no lift access.

Guest feedback highlights the charm and authentic atmosphere of the property, with particular praise for the friendly and helpful staff as well as the quality of the food served. Rooms are described as basic but comfortable, with some guests noting occasional issues related to the building’s age, such as limited air circulation in summer months and the absence of modern conveniences like USB points. Noise from the street is generally not a problem, and the hotel maintains a relaxed ambiance, especially in the courtyard and bar areas.

The New Inn Hotel is suitable for travelers seeking a historically rich setting at an affordable price, especially those prioritizing location and local character over luxury facilities. Its inviting public spaces and proximity to Gloucester’s key cultural sites make it a practical choice for visitors interested in the city’s heritage and atmosphere.

A very pretty courtyard leads to unique rooms off the surrounding gallery in this 15th century coaching Inn. The bar has been refurbished to blend a modern look with the old oak beams and has a good selection of drinks. The food is home cooked and the portions are plentiful. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay. Some reviews mention noise from the street but we didn't hear anything and our stay was a Friday night. Lovely place and we will definitely stay again.

Charming looking building but age has consequences. No lifts, steep and narrow stairs, no central heating or air con. I found the bed very low and the shower a bit slow. The TV was unreliable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for exploring the city on foot.

The food is absolutely sensational for a ‘normal’ looking country town hotel, the service was impeccable and the location is stunning I often paddle board down the Thames and stop at the waterside beer garden here at the New Inn, in the summer it’s a busy hive of happy people, great place !

I wanted to visit the New Inn Hotel because I fell in love with its looks. Such a nice, old building. The staff was extremely lovely. Always cheerful, happy to assist. The breakfast was also very enjoyable, and I also got a discount on it, multiple times. As I visited in the summer, my room was pretty hot. A fan was provided for every room, so they are aware, but the building really isn't prepared for climate change and one fan just can't help that much with the heat that builds up. Having said that, I will 100% visit again, because I had an excellent experience overall.

Lov3ly authentic old coaching inn. Brilliantly located for the Gloucester town and Docks. We stopped there to visit the Christmas market which was great. Clean tidy room, comfortable bed and clean en suite bathroom. Only downside was there was air conditioning unit outside our bedroom that hummed, but this was not on all night. Friendly helpful staff. Good value breakfast.

The staff was outstanding! The young blonde lady who checked us in in the afternoon, went out of her way to make our stay exceptional! The steak and ale pie was the best we ever had! The new end, which is extremely old, is exactly what we expected. We did not expect new rooms, but ones with character. That is exactly what we got! The best part of our stay, were the people who work there. The cook in the evening, came to us several times and asked us if we needed anything. We would definitely stay there again. We highly recommend this place to anyone who goes for character and personality of beautiful England!

Had a lunchtime meal for the 2nd time because we were so impressed with the steak and ale pie and fresh veg. The food was very good but last time they had a small jug of gravy on the side. I asked for one but was told "the gravy is in the pie'. There was some gravy in there but not enough to go around. Would it have been that hard or costly to just bring me some? Nearly ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Room was great. Basic (no fridge/USB points), but good. Price was great (£60 for a double room. Amd location was brilliant. You need to purchase parking (i stayed in the shopping centre car park, less than 2 minutes walk). Parking was £2.50 overnight. Would recommend

Stayed for two nights while travelling by train through Britain. Easy 10 min walk from train station with luggage. Area is under construction so I am sure it will look nicer when completed. Hotel is at the far end of the shopping street so was pretty quiet after 11pm. Building is Grade 1 listed 14 century so has expected sloping floors and period detail. Feels a bit rough, but it was a wet and made things feel a bit more dreary. Pub food was fair, but well priced, chef was very helpful with suggestions. Value was good if you are looking for a very authentic and historic nights stay.
